Reflection CD, Ed Neumeister Quartet
Welcome!!
2/5/2012 7:36:06 PM -
Just came from the JEN conference in Louisville, KY.  Played a concert in quartet with Michael Wolff, John Goldsby & Danny Gottlieb.  We played Spring Street, Gobblers Nob, The Peackocks and Take A Train from the New Standards and Reflection Cd's.  No rehearsal, just "hit". These tunes/arrangements are not easy, to say the least, but these guys did their homework and played them as if they'd been playing them for years.  Actually, that's not completely true.  It is true that they came prepared.  I'd sent them pdf files of the charts and mp3's from the recordings. But, one of the things that made the concert "special" from my point of view was that this combination of players had never played this music together before.  Actually, we had never played together in this combination. Consequently there was an "edge" from the "newness".
Relatively complex music takes time to feel comfortable with and there's nothing like taking the time to rehearse properly so that everyone is prepared to play freely, without abandon. But, do to everyone's schedules, we didn't have the "luxury" of rehearsing for the gig.  Now, I could have decided to play "simple" tunes or music that we were all familiar with, but I knew these guys would be able to deal with my "stuff".  And they did!

The combination of the newness and the individual players confidence and mastery resulted in a wonderful concert, if I do say so myself.  The audience appeared to agree with that assessment.

Also gave a lecture/demonstration on Creative Practicing - Practice Creatively.
